Uruguay advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals after an exciting 2–1 victory over South Korea on Saturday at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth.
Striker Luis Suarez scored both Uruguayan goals including a brilliant winner in the 80th minute.
On a very rainy day, Suarez got Uruguay’s first goal courtesy of a goalkeeping error by Jung Song-Ryong, who let a ball through the six-yard box just run by.
South Korea took charge after that as Uruguay seemed content to defend their one-goal lead. The Koreans put up some good pressure and created a few good chances.
They were finally rewarded in the 68th minute when Lee Chung-Yong headed home the equalizer. Uruguay’s goalkeeper Fernando Muslera came out to stop the header but instead got caught in no man’s land and his team conceded its first goal of the tournament.
From then on, Uruguay came back to life. Off a Diego Forlan corner, Suarez got control of the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and curled a right-footer just off the inside of the post and into the net.
His shot almost seemed to defy the laws of physics although the Jabulani ball has been criticized for its movement in the air.
Uruguay moves on to face the winner of the USA–Ghana match, which will be played later on Saturday.
