When I was in college in Korea, during one summer vacation I went to a beauty salon and got my first hair perm. My hair was medium length. I had no idea what a perm would do at that time. “Perm” just meant very curly. So, I asked for it. And of course, it came out pretty curly. When my male friends at college saw me, they were shocked. They teased me for the whole semester, saying that lightning had hit my hair and the electric shock curled it.
That was in the mid 1980s. I am sure many of us have had that kind of experience. I have ample experience in this regard.
I have been living with the Chinese community for years, and one day a Korean lady made me laugh when she said, “I thought you were Chinese.” I asked, “Why?” She answered, “Your curly hair. Nobody has that kind of curly hair in Korea.” But an even funnier story is about the hair perm I got in Mexico in 2004. It came out very curly. My Mexican friends said that I looked like a Brazilian football player they had seen on TV.
New Methods Developed
The perm has been evolving constantly, from very curly to less curly, and now it has become just a wavy curl. From the 1960s to the ’70s and ’80s, we remember a very curly perm. Its main purpose was to make the curl last for a long time (hence the name “perm” for “permanent”) and also to give volume to flat hair. So the perm was very curly; it was called a spiral perm. The purpose was to make the curl last, and was not for the style.
Hairstylist Jeff Jo explained the new look of the perm treatment. Now the hair perm is used for style, to make hair look good, he said. Its main focus is volume. A slight wave occurs in straight hair, so it is called a wave perm. The term “perm” now means “wave.”
Also in the past, women usually kept their hair straight, natural and long. They used to tie their hair back with a hair band or a rubber band.
However, now, as women become more active in this society, dramatic changes have occurred to their hair. The career women in modern days wear their hair short, medium, or very long, and they prefer the wave perm that gives their hair volume and style. This wave perm looks very natural, and it does not bring a dramatic or violent change like perms in the old days did.
The new perm is also called a “Setting Perm,” a “Heat Perm,” or a “Billow Perm”; it gives hair bold, long, loose, and natural waves. It connects the waves from the top to the bottom naturally. It costs about $150 and up, depending on the hair’s length. So the hair style for 2010 is a natural-looking, wavy style.
