The four-team college football playoff is finally official. University presidents agreed Tuesday to the groundbreaking postseason.
“By making this change we felt we could enhance the regular season but at the same time provide the fans with the kind of postseason that will contribute to the regular season,” Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive said, according to The Associated Press.
Starting with the 2014 season four teams will be selected by a yet-to-be-determined committee and play in the semifinals at sites that will rotate among the four major BCS Bowls.
The first semifinal will always be played on Dec. 31 and the second then on Jan. 1. The championship game will then be played on the first Monday that’s at least six days following the second semifinal.
That schedule will put the first championship game on Jan. 12, 2015. The site of the championship game will move around from year to year.
