Police responded to reports of shots being fired near the University of Wisconsin-Madison on Wednesday night and issued a shelter-in-place at 6:45 p.m., but around two hours later said that the shelter-in-place is lifted.

Still, police are asking students to avoid the area along the lake from Lake Street to just west of Lot 34. “You will see police activity in the area along the lake path,” police said via Twitter.

Students are free to go to their dorms or elsewhere.

Madison Police Department spokesman Joel DeSpain told WKOW that two suspects, 17 and 18 years old, are in custody in connection with the shots.

“Initial information indicates a 19-year old man was robbed – at gunpoint - of his backpack, wallet and keys by two suspects. The holdup happened in the 100 block of W. Gilman St. around 6:20 p.m.,” he said.

Police believe a friend or friends of the victim chased the two suspects, and one round was fired into the air by one of the suspects. It’s unclear whether the shot was fired at someone or into the air. One suspect was captured at a bus stop on Observatory Drive, while the second was found near the intersection of Gilman Street and Henry Street.

Earlier, the university stressed that people should stay away from the Langdon Street area after the shots were reported at at 130 Langdon Street, but tweeted that it is “not an active shooter situation.”

Also earlier, UW tweeted that officials were looking for a “black male wearing black clothing with a black/white baseball cap, black jacket, dark backpack.”

It is unclear if anyone was injured.
