Ryan Hunter-Reay of Andretti Autosport ran quickly, and more important, cleanly to win his second IndyCar race in a row, the Iowa Corn Indy 250. After a dominating performance at the Milwaukee Mile, RHR survived a collision-ridden, rain-delayed race on the 7/8 mile Iowa Speedway, the shortest track the series races.
“That was very challenging,” Hunter-Reay told IndyCar.com. “We were sliding around a little bit more today. I have to thank Marco. They came here and tested. Marco put the setup on the car. When we came here, we tweaked it just a little. From there, we basically raced with what he tested.
“Marco and I raced really hard out there, really clean. It’s great to have a teammate like that and we’re just so happy to be in Victory Lane twice in a row.”
RHR steered clear of several collisions and accidents which brought out yellow flags, and found his car was the best on the track in the final 30 laps. He overtook teammate Marco Andretti on lap 234 and leader Scott Dixon four laps later; Dixon’s tires were going off. Andretti followed by.
On lap 247 Katherine Legge hit the wall, giving Andretti Autosport a 1–2 win; had teammate James Hinchcliffe not hit the wall on lap 196, it could have been an AA 1–2–3, as the AA cars were among the best on the track.
The win moved Hunter-Reay into second in the points race, three behind Penske’s Will Power.
