Cain was a “Powerful Voice of Freedom and all that is good,” Trump wrote on social media before hailing the fellow Republican for having an incredible career and being liked by everyone he met.
“He was a very special man, an American Patriot, and great friend. I just got off the phone with his amazing wife Gloria, daughter, Melanie, and son Vincent to express my deepest condolences to the entire family,” Trump said.
Both he and his wife, first lady Melania Trump, loved Cain, Trump added.
Cain, 74, was a former GOP presidential candidate and business executive.
Symptoms for the new disease may appear two to 14 days after exposure to the CCP virus, according to public health officials. Symptoms include fever, chills, cough, fatigue, and loss of taste or smell.
At the time, Cain’s team said he did not require a respirator and that he was resting comfortably at the hospital in the Atlanta area.
Dan Calabrese, who helped run Cain’s website, announced Thursday morning that his boss “had trouble breathing and was taken to the hospital by ambulance.”
It became clear that Cain “was in for a battle” after an initial course of medication didn’t seem to have an effect, he said.
Because of Cain’s age and history with cancer, he was considered high-risk, Calabrese noted.
The CCP virus primarily causes severe illness for the elderly and infirm.
Most patients don’t require hospital care and many show few or no symptoms.
