OTTAWA—Liberal MP Justin Trudeau beat Conservative Senator Patrick Brazeau in a fund-raising boxing match on the weekend.
Conditions of a bet between the contenders meant that the loser, Brazeau, had to get his hair cut in the foyer of the House of Commons Monday and wear a Liberal-logoed hockey sweater with “Trudeau No. 1” on the back. He will wear the jersey to work for the rest of the week.
Although Brazeau came on strong early in the first round, underdog Trudeau quickly had the upper hand, with the referee calling the match before the end of the third round. The match raised $230,000 for the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation.
Both men have good reason to “Fight for the Cure”: Brazeau lost his mother to cancer in 2004 and Trudeau lost his father, former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, to prostate cancer in 2000.
Brazeau, a black belt martial artist and former army man, was favoured 3 to 1 before the fight began, but Trudeau’s longer reach and cooler fighting style won the match with a TKO.
Each bore scars of the fight as they went about their day in Parliament on Monday. Trudeau said his jaw was still sore and Brazeau had the beginnings of a shiner.
