TAIPEI, Taiwan—Shen Yun Performing Arts’ eighth performance in Taipei on Feb. 25 played to a full house. Mr. Li from China said with a heavy accent from his hometown, “What strikes me the most is that traditional Chinese culture should be inherited and flourished in by foreigners.”
“Seeing the legends and myths in Shen Yun’s program gives me a familiar and friendly feeling. I could not find such a performance in China but only overseas.”
Mr. Li was in Taiwan on a business trip and a friend introduced him to Shen Yun Performing Arts currently performing in Taiwan.
“The TV shows and stage performances in China are mostly modern and fashionable stuff. They are boring and empty. Basically they are shows promoting the Chinese Communist Party. Authentic traditions were treated as feudal and superstitious and were eradicated. Shen Yun, based in the U.S., inherited it and are flourishing in it and bringing it back to life.”
‘Belief is a choice and freedom’
Ms. Liu was enchanted by Shen Yun’s performance that evening as well. She was especially impressed with the story An Unexpected Encounter. She felt sad though seeing those who held on to what they believed and were persecuted as a result.
She frankly admitted that what touched her the most in Shen Yun’s stories was seeing Falun Gong practitioners suppressed. “Belief is a choice and freedom that one should not be coerced into giving up.”
She indeed believed the existence of the worlds and paradises of divine beings presented in the Shen Yun performance. “The Chinese people believed in and respected gods since the beginning of time. Putting this on the stage is a great idea.”
Ms. Liu enjoyed Shen Yun’s live orchestral music. “The music is very special and pleasing to the ear. I liked it a lot. There were both Chinese and Western musical instruments, which creates a mesmerizing effect.”
In conclusion, Ms. Liu stressed that Shen Yun was “definitely worth watching!”
