April 11, 1986, Dodge Morgan became the first American sailor to successfully circumnavigate the globe sailing solo nonstop, completing the 27,000-nautical mile journey in a record-breaking time of 150 days, 1 hour, and 6 minutes. Morgan sailed out of Bermuda on Nov. 12, 1985 to begin his historic voyage in his 60-foot boat, “American Promise.” Onboard, Morgan had 650 pounds of tools and spare parts, approximately 300 pounds of clothing, and 1,600 pounds of food, primarily freeze-dried. In 2010, Dodge Morgan died of cancer at the age of 78 in Maine, United States.

Today, Briton Jeanne Socrates, the oldest woman to circumnavigate the globe solo, at 69 years old and preparing for her third around-the-world trip in her vessel “Nereida.” This time, she intends to make the voyage nonstop. Last May, she completed her second trip ending in South Africa. Jeanne Socrates, a grandmother, is currently en route to Victoria, British Columbia in Canada to stage her third attempt.
