NEW YORK—In 1976, Raymond Weil, a Swiss man who had been working in the watchmaking industry for more than 20 years, decided to go against the downturn of the industry and establish a watch brand after his name.

Since then, Weil has combined the precision and fine craftsmanship of the Swiss into noble designs and created a history of success for the Raymond Weil brand. President and CEO Olivier Bernheim, his son-in-law, joined the company as a key member in the 1980s, and later Weil’s grandsons and granddaughter joined.

“Except Raymond Weil, there are few Swiss watchmaker families that are still around in the business,” says Bernheim.

Today, at almost 90, Weil continues to come to the company’s headquarters in Geneva to personally look after the business.

It is the experience of the older generation and the passion of the younger generation that has made each Raymond Weil watch what it is—a true work of art.

Raymond Weil watches are manufactured entirely in Switzerland. Quality is extremely important for the brand and the Swiss Made label, so for Raymond Weil, this goes from the selection of materials, to the making of the components, to the assembling. Each watch has to go through 350 checks before receiving the brand’s quality label.

“Thanks to its experience, know-how, and to the mechanical precision of its watchmakers, Raymond Weil is capable of transforming a design concept into a high quality watch to please its demanding clients,” says the company’s website.

Prices range from $895 for a men’s stainless steel watch from the Tango collection, to $2,460 for a diamond-studded ladies model with a white mother of pearl dial.

Many of the collections are named after characters from classical musicals and operas. The founder himself was an ardent lover of the arts. The brand’s slogan is “Independence is really a state of mind.”
