Justin Timberlake dressed as Elton John in a Saturday Night Live skit sang his mock tribute to the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez: “It seems to me that you lived your life like a candle in the wind. … If a candle could pull out two pistols at a press conference.”
One Twitter user described the tribute as “funny and disrespectful.”
Timberlake made references to some famous Chavez quotes, including when Chavez said he would not be surprised if ““there had been civilization on Mars, but … capitalism arrived there, imperialism arrived, and finished off the planet.”
He also referenced Chavez’s claims that American military tests may have caused the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.
Timberlake sang, “You called George Bush the devil when you spoke at the U.N.”
In the introduction to the skit, a Venezuelan patriot declares that Chavez will be remembered in the “voices and fists,” of his people.
