Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez will likely miss the 2012 season after test results came back on Monday revealing he tore his ACL in his left knee last week, according to a statement by the team.
“I would not use the word devastating,” general manager and President Dave Dombrowski said on the team’s website. “I would say you’re hit in the gut, you pick yourself up and you go.”
Martinez has elected to get a second opinion from Dr. Richard Stedman next week.
Martinez was doing offseason-conditioning drills when the injury occurred. “He was doing a lateral move,” head athletic trainer Kevin Rand said on the team’s website. “He had his right foot slip, and all his weight came down on his left knee.”
With the season fast approaching, and most of the prized free agent’s taken, it will be hard to replace Martinez’s bat in the lineup.
