NEW YORK—Enrico Ferorelli is a photographer and photojournalist. During his long career he has worked for publications like Life Magazine, National Geographic Magazine, and The New Yorker. The Epoch Times caught up with Ferorelli as he was walking his dog in Madison Square Park.
Ferorelli was born in Rome in 1941 and moved to New York City in 1971. He is currently working on a book.
The Epoch Times: Why did you move to New York?
Mr. Enrico Ferorelli: For my work, New York was for a long time the best place you could be. Now photography is finished as a profession. Photojournalism is dead. You can probably make more money as a cop in law enforcement than you make as a photographer. You cannot make [a] decent living in photography anymore. If you shoot fashion, maybe, but not as a journalist.
Epoch Times: How has the city changed over the years?
Enrico Ferorelli: It changes continuously. It changed over the years and, I would say, for the better. It has always been an interesting place. There is nothing like New York City, you know, the music, the dance, the food, the activities, and the intellectual quality of the people. It is a wonderful place.
Epoch Times: How did the city look when you came here in 1971?
Enrico Ferorelli: The first shock was to come here and find a country I thought was at war in Vietnam. ... I came here, and, war? It didn’t have a sense at all of a country at war. I came from Italy where when we had the war it was a big deal. It changed people’s lives.
Epoch Times: What is your book about?
Enrico Ferorelli: It is about the stories behind the stories. All the stories of what I shot. Some things got published, some things didn’t get published. What happened? What it was like?
Epoch Times: What is your favorite park to go with your dog?
Enrico Ferorelli: My dog’s name is Mimi, like in La Boheme. We come here [to Madison Square Park] to see squirrels and stuff. It is a short walk from 29th Street. We come here and then we go back.
