NEW YORK—“It was like watching the movement of water and snowflakes, and the harmony of nature,” was how Cathy Bland experienced the dancing of Shen Yun Performing Arts at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater.
“It was just magnificent, awe-inspiring,” Ms. Bland said after the performance on Saturday.
Classical Chinese dance is at the heart of every Shen Yun performance. “Through expression of bearing and form, beautiful dance movements bring out the inner meaning of intrinsic thoughts and feelings, reflecting the peculiarities of human nature, the standard for human conduct, moral concepts, mental state, one’s value system, and so on,” Shen Yun’s website says.
Andre Bland, a real estate broker, attending the performance with his wife, said everything about it was special: “the choreography, the scenery, the dancers, the music, and the performers.”
“I think that the show is just fabulous, my compliments and great admiration for all that participated in the show,” he said, adding that he recommends everyone to see it.
VP Learns of a Different China
John Overaasen, vice president of Foreign Exchange at Goldman Sachs, would likewise recommend his friends to see Shen Yun when it returns in April.
“It was different from anything I have ever seen before. I loved the music, the dance, the songs and the colors of the costumes, and the visuals behind the scene,” he said.
Mr. Overaasen said he had never experienced true Chinese culture before.
“I’ve found out that it’s very different from what maybe the current culture as being portrayed, especially abroad,” said Mr. Overaasen. “It seems to portray good messages in terms of having courage, and in terms of being brave.”
New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has three companies touring the works simultaneously with a mission to show the world the true essence of China’s 5,000-year civilization. Through dance, music, and song the company is reviving the divinely inspired culture that is under the threat of extinction under the communist rule in China.
“It was a great experience to see the true culture in terms of music and dance,” Mr. Overaasen said.
