A gunman was spotted on Tarant County College in Arlington, Texas, on Tuesday. Officials told students to keep quiet and duck down.
Police suspect that the gunman is a burglary suspect who is armed, according to WFAA television in Dallas.
The college’s southeastern campus was locked down after the suspect was spotted in a forested area nearby, police spokeswoman Rita Parson said.
She described it as an “unrelated police incident near campus.”
Those on the campus have been told to stay put.
“TAKE ACTION NOW - LEAVE IF YOU CAN. If not, STAY in your room or building, TURN OUT lights, CLOSE blinds, LOCK or barricade doors, HIDE under furniture, STAY away from doors and windows, SILENCE your cell phones. Await further instructions,” an alert from the campus said.
However, officials lifted the campus lockdown at around 1 p.m., according to Fox News.
Tarrant County College also tweeted that the “SE Campus is currently on lockdown. Armed suspect is near campus. More details to come as available,” according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
It also tweeted: “Southeast Campus is closed immediately for the remainder of the day. Police will remain on site to ensure safe and orderly flow of traffic.”
“I was registering for a class in a hallway,” 19-year-old Sheridan Glass told the paper. “Someone told us to get into the library...We’re supposed to stay here until someone comes and gets us.”
