In an unprecedented move Kenya’s prime minister, Raila Odinga suspended two high level officials for alleged misappropriation of funds.
This is the first time high officials have been held accountable for corruption in the country plagued by governmental misconduct. However, just two hours after the decision, President Mwai Kibaki declared the suspensions invalid.
The move increased pressure on the already fragile cooperation between the two political rivals. Allies of Odinga have said they will boycott cabinet meetings until the dispute has been settled.
International pressure in 2007 made the two politicians from different ethnic groups to form a coalition. Severe riots following the elections cost 1,300 lives.
