NEW YORK—Spring might be belated this year, but the Highline is getting an extra touch of green. Ten teenagers from the Highline Green Corps program as well as park volunteers are planting trees and plants on elevated Chelsea Park from March 27 to 29.
The three days of work conclude a six-month program in which the teens learned about horticulture and sustainability and worked side by side with the park’s gardeners.
“It’s good, I like it a lot. I like the cutback, and the cleaning, and to see plants grow,” said Juwaan Davis, 15.
The Highline Green Corps program was created after a survey was conducted with nearby housing projects to see what people wanted to see more of from the park. Two of the most common requests were a program for teenagers and a way to get involved with the plantings in the area.
“I’m excited about the idea that doing a program with teens most of whom live in the public housing that’s closest to the park can build a sense of ownership for the Highline in their communities,” said Emily Pinkowitz, manager of education, teen, and family programs with the Friends of the Highline.
