Tassimo Coffee Makers and Espresso Discs Recalled

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a voluntary recall of Tassimo coffee makers due to a fault with the machine where hot liquid could be dispatched resulting in certain consumers receiving serious burns.

The products were made in Slovenia and China between the period of June 2008 up until the recall was publicized. Affected models included the Tassimo single-cup brewer and also the Tassimo Professional.

According to Reuters, more than 1.7 million single-cup brewer models and an extra 4 million of the Tassimo units were recalled since last Feb. 9. At least 160 consumers have suffered injuries, with a 10-year-old girl from Minnesota experiencing second-degree burns to her face and neck, and a 2-year-old girl with similar injuries. The machines are either branded with “BOSCH” or “TASSIMO,” and were made by BSH Home Appliance Corp.

“The plastic disc, or T Disc, [this is the tool] which holds the coffee or tea, can burst and spray hot liquid and coffee grounds or tea leaves onto consumers using the brewer and onto bystanders, posing a burn hazard,” said a statement on the company’s consumer website.

Another recall was announced by the Illinois-based Kraft Foods Global Inc. and maker of Tassimo espresso T Discs, which sells prepackaged ground beans that are packaged with their own filter.

The blockage appeared to be caused by this item, hence hot liquid and coffee grounds would be dispersed resulting in the severe injuries. In terms of this product, around 2.1 million packages were recalled in the United States and 1.9 million in Canada.
