Taiwan’s Lin Yu-Chun, who became an overnight international sensation on YouTube, much as Britain’s Susan Boyle had done, has returned home following his first appearances in the United States.
The lovable, chubby, and enormously talented young man won first place in Super Star Avenue, Taiwan’s equivalent of American Idol in late March. A video clip of his rendition of Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You on YouTube attracted millions of hits within 48 hours. He was dubbed “the next Susan Boyle” and accolades poured in from around the world.
Lin was invited to appear on the Ellen DeGeneres Show and Lopez Tonight on April 20.
After the two appearances, Lin said he was most touched by the enthusiastic standing ovation the show hosts and audience gave him. His singing of I Will Always Love You moved some in the audience to tears.
For the show Lopez Tonight he was asked to sing Total Eclipse of the Heart, Bonnie Tyler’s hit of the 1980s. Though Lin had never heard the song before, he was able to perform it after three hours of rehearsal with William Shatner of Star Trek fame.
Lin said appearing on the two shows was an unforgettable experience. He was treated like a big star with access to a dressing-room trailer equipped with shower, restroom, sofa, and TV. Host Ellen DeGeneres presented him with two VIP tickets to American Idol, and host George Lopez sent a dozen tubs of chocolate Haagen-Dazs ice cream, Lin’s favorite, to his room.
Lin admitted that he was nervous and shaky before walking up to the stage, but once onstage, he just threw caution to the wind and gave it his best.
Lin was treated to a tour of Hollywood’s Walk of Fame on April 22 where many passersby recognized and photographed him, calling him “Taiwan boy.”
The 24-year-old, who recently became the new pride of Taiwan, says he is very proud to let more people know about Taiwan.
In an earlier interview with Taiwan’s Central News Agency, Lin said he dedicated I Will Always Love You to his grandmother who has been with him since childhood and played a big role in his life. She encouraged him to perform whenever they went to a party, and cheered him on during his singing competitions despite the disapproval of his parents.
When Taiwanese media asked Lin what he wanted to improve on, he answered that he needed to work on his singing, physique, strength, and English. He gave himself a score of 70-80 for his performances. When asked how long he thinks he will be famous, he said that all he can do is work his hardest.
