Susan Taylor died while she was trying to swim across the English Channel to raise money for a charity, officials said. The U.K. woman was swimming the Channel on Sunday evening but she got into trouble near the coast of France.

The Independent reported that she was just one mile from the coast, which was the end of her swim.

A charity for diabetes said she collapsed in the water and was taken to a French hospital and died. Taylor was swimming for the charity as well as a hospice charity.

The French foreign office confirmed she died on Monday, reported The Associated Press.

Her brother, David, told the Independent that he put her on a support boat in an attempt to save her.

Taylor was taking part in a 21-mile endurance swim to raise money.

She raised several thousand dollars before she died. The Independent reported that after her death, the funds raised to more than $25,0000.

“I’m devastated. I’ve lost the best person in the world. She was just wonderful… She had swum 30 miles and she got to the last part and that’s when it happened. That’s as much as I know,” her father told Sky News.
