A speed camera installed by the Department of Transportation on Hylan Boulevard and Burbank Avenue has been shut off after inquiries.

Staten Island Advance spotted the camera and noted it was not on the same street as a school entrance or exit and within a quarter mile of the school, the state prerequisite for installing the speed cameras.

The tickets that have already been issued from the camera will be rescinded. If a driver already paid the $50 dollar fine the Department of Finance will refund it.

Senator Diane Savino had reached out to DOT commissioner Polly Trottenberg after learning the camera was placed illegally. Savino had voted in favor of installing speed cameras in school zones and told Advance the placement on Hylan Boulevard was not the intended use for the cameras.

New Dorp High School is nearby, but not on the same street as Hylan Boulevrard or Burbank Avenue. DOT spokesperson Nicholas Mosquera had said 92 percent of vehicles speed near the school.

However, Hylan Boulevard is a main street for Staten Islanders and not typically considered a school zone.
