The New York Jets named Tony Sparano offensive coordinator on Wednesday according to a statement. The move came hours after Brian Schottenheimer, this team’s offensive coordinator for the past six seasons, informed the team he would not be back for the 2012 season.
“I’m very proud to be part of such an outstanding organization and to have an opportunity to work with these players,” Sparano said in a statement. “I know this division very well and I’m looking forward to that challenge.”
Sparano spent the previous four seasons as the Miami Dolphins head coach. In 2008, his first season, he led the Dolphins to the playoffs and a 10-win improvement from the previous year. He was not able to recapture that magic in subsequent seasons, including posting a 4-9 record this past season and was fired by Miami on Dec. 12.
Schottenheimer is rumored to be in the running for the offensive coordinator’s job with the University of Alabama, according to a report on al.com.
