SAN JOSE, Calif.—Retired social workers Jim and Cindy Kuehn came down from Napa, the heart of California’s wine country, to see the matinee of Shen Yun Performing Arts at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts on Jan. 5.

The couple spent 30 years working for people with development disabilities, a career they found to be very rewarding. Both had nothing but good things to say about Shen Yun.

It “is really, really spectacular.” It gives a message “of spiritual strength and depth and interior enlightenment. I just loved it; I just thought it was great,” Mr. Kuehn said.

Shen Yun seeks to revive traditional Chinese culture through dance pieces as well as songs. “Principles such as benevolence and justice, propriety and wisdom, respect for the heavens, and divine retribution, all come to life, washing over the audience,” says Shen Yun’s website.

Many people, including Mr. and Mrs. Kuehns have described deeper meanings contained in Shen Yun performances.

Mrs. Kuehn said, “I think it is just so important to get the word out to people what a beautiful culture [the Chinese people] had.”

Being based in New York, Shen Yun can freely display the essence of traditional Chinese culture, something which is not possible within present-day China. Shen Yun is bringing this to audiences the world over, in the East and West.

Mr. Kuehn explained that the performance is “a good balance for Westerners who are not in tune with interior reality and spiritual things ... and so this is a good balance and a very good message for all of us.”

New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has three companies that perform simultaneously around the world. Shen Yun’s Touring Company will be in Vancouver until Jan. 13, while the New York Company will complete its tour of eastern Canada with five shows in Toronto from Jan. 17–20.
