COSTA MESA, Calif.—Tom Britton, retired business consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers, and his wife Deborah went to the sold-out Shen Yun Performing Arts show at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts on Saturday evening, Jan. 19.
Mr. and Mrs. Britton both said they loved the show. “Tonight has been a very special evening,” said Mr. Britton.
New York-based Shen Yun was established in 2006. Its website says Shen Yun performances feature the world’s foremost classically trained dancers, a unique orchestra blending the sounds of both East and West, breathtaking backdrops, splendid costumes, and talented solo vocalists.
The Brittons were very impressed with the dancers. “Everything is so graceful. The girl dancers, they look like they’re floating across the stage, and the male performers, they really have strength. I can appreciate that,” said Mrs. Britton.
Shen Yun’s vibrant costumes and elegant headpieces are each handmade for the show, according to its website.
“I think the costuming, especially the way they use the sleeves, is absolutely beautiful,” said Mrs. Britton. “I might add, the colors in the costumes are fantastic. They really are quite remarkable,” said Mr. Britton.
The interactive digital backdrop also made quite an impression.
“I think it’s quite unique, the way that they transition from the spiritual world to the physical world, and disappearing behind the stage and then coming alive in the background, I think that’s very creative and very interesting,” said Mr. Britton.
Mrs. Britton was appreciative of Shen Yun for helping her understand the persecution of the spiritual group Falun Dafa.
“I didn’t understand what Falun Dafa was, and so I have a better understanding now, and I understand the persecution. It must be terrible to be persecuted for your beliefs,” she said.
She was referring to one of the pieces in the performance called An Unexpected Encounter which portrays the persecution ongoing in mainland China since 1999.
The couple encouraged everyone to go see Shen Yun. “I would say that it is truly exceptional; it’s one-of-a-kind,” said Mr. Britton. “It’s a must-see, absolute must-see. I think everybody should come and experience it,” said Mrs. Britton.
