DETROIT—“It is beautiful,” said Tricia Kinley at the Jan. 27 Shen Yun performance. “It’s educational, the dancing is phenomenal, beautiful, athletic, athleticism by all the performers, but it’s also very educational.”
Mrs. Kinley is a senior director with the Michigan Chamber of Commerce. She saw the final 2013 Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company performance at Detroit Opera House.
She said she admired the female dancers and their costumes. “The ladies are beautiful, the dresses are beautiful. I think the performances are beautiful, but again, to see a little insight into a China that maybe we’re not really familiar with, just subtle, has been very nice,” she said.
Shen Yun’s mission is reviving 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture.
“I’ve been to Beijing, and it was fascinating, but this performance is very educational. It’s enlightening,” Mrs. Kinley said. Shen Yun is based in New York and has not yet performed in mainland China.
“The costumes are gorgeous, but I think the best part is seeing how expert the performers are,” she says. “They’re clearly top tier performers. This has really been phenomenal.”
“Shen Yun Performing Arts’ dance style is built upon classical Chinese dance as a foundation, while also maintaining a number of ethnic and folk dances. This combination embodies Chinese people’s estheticism and ethnic character,” states the Shen Yun website.
The dancers interact with an animated digital backdrop. Mrs. Kinley said it was beautifully done to incorporate the video [backdrops], and then have dancers come out is very natural. It looks beautiful and natural.”
