HAMILTON, Canada—For Peter Brown, who owns an eponymously titled financial and strategic planning firm, it was all about the colours.

“The colours, really, that’s the first thing that struck me is the beautiful colours of the costumes,” he said after attending Shen Yun Performing Arts’ show on Sunday night.

The sold-out show at Hamilton Place was an introduction to China’s diversity, he said, though he was already aware of the Middle Kingdom’s long and ancient civilization.

Shen Yun presents classical Chinese dance, an art form passed down dynasty after dynasty. The company’s costume artists collect hundreds of designs from throughout China’s long and unbroken history. Then each year, they recreate hundreds of pieces in splendid colour.

“The costumes are magnificent. To me, it may be the best thing of all, the colours, and the way things flow.”

As a whole, he said the entire show was spectacular.

“The energy that there is within the dancers impressed me. And the soprano, the singer was beautiful. She had a beautiful voice.”

Shen Yun’s backdrop is amazing, he added, praising the interactions between animated characters and the dancers on the stage.

“I thought that was very inventive, very creative.”

Mr. Brown said he particularly appreciated the poses the female dancers would strike at the end of many of the dances.

“There was a beauty in that symmetry.”

He said he also enjoyed Shen Yun’s two emcees, who introduce each dance, sometimes explaining the context, or joking with the audience.

“I think that really adds a lot to the enjoyment.”

Mr. Brown has thirty years of experience in finance and business operations and earned his C.A. in 1977 and many other designations since.

He also volunteers for community groups focused on economic development, soccer, as well as the Niagara Community Foundation. He is also a past president of the Kiwanis Club of St Catharines.
