NEW YORK—Composer Donna Wyant, along with her husband and granddaughter braved a harsh winter evening to attend a sold out performance by Shen Yun Performing Arts at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater on Jan. 14.
“I am very uplifted and moved to tears. It is so magnificent,” said Ms. Wyant following the performance.
Shen Yun Performing Arts aims to revive China’s 5,000 year civilization through dance, music, and song.
“I would like to bring everyone I know to see this wonderful cultural program,” said Ms. Wyant. “I think that the spirit of the Chinese people and the history is something that we all can learn from.”
Ms. Wyant said the orchestra’s blend of traditional Chinese instruments with western classical instruments was “remarkable.”
“I really appreciated the blend of music, which was done very tastefully and very unusual to hear because these are some of your instruments that have only two strings but they are so pronounced, and so easy to hear, even with all the other instruments,” Ms. Wyant said. “That was really brilliant for me.”
Ms. Wyant’s granddaughter is a gymnast and a dancer in training. Shen Yun was both educational and inspirational to the aspiring young dancer.
“She was very appreciative of a lot of the wonderful traditional Chinese dance that looks like gymnastics to us but is really classical Chinese dance. We learned this from the program,” Ms. Wyant said.
Bilingual masters of ceremony preface each dance with engaging insights into China’s divinely inspired civilization, its epic tales, and its ethnic diversity.
