SAN FRANCISCO—Shen Yun Performing Arts, the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, performed at the SHN Orpheum Theatre on Sunday, March 24. Among those attending was AnnElise Emerson.
“It’s an incredible performance of art, gracefulness,” said Ms. Emerson, the CFO of Light & Motion Industries in Monterey, Calif.
Ms. Emerson says she drove for two hours to come see the performance.
“What impressed me most is [that] the incredible strength of the dancers looked so graceful and ethereal,” Ms. Emerson said. “It’s a beautiful, beautiful classical dance.”
“It lifted my heart,” she said.
New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts was founded in 2006 with the mission of reviving 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture.
Ms. Emerson said that she loved the stories depicted in the performance. Part of Shen Yun’s performances are mini-theatrical pieces that depict stories and legends from China.
“I loved the stories … the explanations of the stories were very good,” she said, referring to the introductions about the pieces given by the masters of ceremonies.
Ms. Emerson said she particularly enjoyed the piece An Early Spring, a vibrant northeastern folk dance in which the dancers’ twirling handkerchiefs symbolize the change of seasons.
“I don’t think I'll look at cherry blossoms in the spring without remembering that dance,” Ms. Emerson said.
