BEAVER CREEK, Colo.—Taking her back to her Asian roots, Shen Yun Performing Arts left a deep impression on retired entrepreneur Lai Huayt, who was born in Vietnam. For her, it inspired a yearning for home.
“I feel great, I love it,” Ms. Huayt said with tears in her eyes after watching the performance at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek on April 7.
Based in New York, Shen Yun has a mission to bring back 5,000 years of China’s divinely inspired culture through dance and music.
Ms. Huayt said Vietnam has a very old history similar to China, and it has also been influenced greatly by the Chinese culture.
“So [Shen Yun] kind of makes me … very emotional, because I miss home, I’m homesick,” Ms. Huayt said.
The Shen Yun orchestra which combines traditional Chinese instruments with Western classical instruments, particularly stood out for her.
“The best part was the music, it makes me homesick too,” she said.
Adding to the experience were the state-of-the art animated backdrops, which show breathtaking scenes ranging from celestial palaces and ancient legends to scenes from contemporary China.
Ms. Huayt said the effects realized with the backdrops and their interaction with the stage is “wonderful,” as they made her feel like she was inside the scene.
“The effect is incredible,” she said.
The hundreds of hand-made costumes in the performance were also something to marvel at, Ms. Huayt said, who also had high praise for the dance performances.
“[I] loved the way they make the dance so unified… and the facial expression is wonderful,” she said.
Ms. Huayt said she was fortunate to be able to see Shen Yun in Beaver Creek.
“I appreciate that this whole thing so big came to a little town … I really appreciate it,” she said.
“[Shen Yun is] magnificent, magnificent, very nice.”
