MESA, Ariz.—A rousing standing ovation was given for Shen Yun Performing Arts on Saturday evening, March 2, at the Ikeda Theater. “To say it was inspiring would not be sufficient. I would say almost spiritual,” said designer Gary Molski.
Joining Mr. Molski was his wife, Nancy, a customer service representative, saying, “It was fantastic, much better than I could have imagined.”
Shen Yun presents China’s ancient culture through the medium of classical Chinese dance. The Shen Yun website describes the development of this form of dance: “Soaking up profound wisdom from every era and dynasty, it has become a complete system of dance embodying traditional aesthetic principles with its unique dance movements, rhythms, and inner meaning.”
“The female dancers, the beauty,” said Mr. Molski, “they put their whole heart and soul into what they did—they’re magnificent.”
Shen Yun will perform in over 20 countries and 100 cities this season, bringing to the stage performances steeped in China’s divinely inspired culture.
As a family who years ago opened their home to foreign exchange students from Japan, Shen Yun “brought back a lot of memories of what culture is from another country,” said Mr. Molski.
What Mr. Molski found most impressive were the dancer’s collaboration with each other and the expression on their faces. He also noticed that the talent was much more mature than their youthful appearance and how they represented their country and culture in a wonderful way.
Sharing the evening with Mr. and Mrs. Molski were their granddaughters, and they said Shen Yun evoked the feeling of love for family, especially for those who don’t live nearby.
While Mr. Molski enjoyed the special effects, it was mostly the hand gestures, the dancing, and the costumes that were “wonderful,” he said.
Adding that he “won’t ever forget” the performance, he said that he was retiring in a few years and Shen Yun was “something I didn’t expect at this point in my life. I would see it again tomorrow.”
Mr. Molski plans to call his twin sister in California and tell her “you have to go.” And he requested that the reporter “tell the people that put [Shen Yun] together, job well done.”
“It’s a performance that you really shouldn’t miss,” said Mrs. Molski. “Magnificent, colorful, and inspiring.”
State-of-the-art digitally mastered backdrops offer the imagination a view into another realm, enhancing the stage performance. Shen Yun’s orchestra melds Eastern instruments such as the erhu, pipa, and dizi with classical Western symphonic instruments, resulting in a unique and ethereal sound.
“The backdrop was awesome, and your orchestra is wonderful,” said Mrs. Molski.
