WATERBURY, Conn.—Shen Yun Performing Arts impressed and enthralled the full house at the Palace Theater on Thursday evening.
“The history, the dancing, the singing, the combination of all the pieces of the arts, the backdrops, the 3-D effect—everything is fabulous,” said Linnet Carty, a host on Channel 5.
Based in New York, Shen Yun presents the 5,000 years of Chinese culture in a multi-layered performance.
“Sophisticated dance techniques, an orchestra joining instruments East and West, beautiful costumes, and a stunning back drop—this is Shen Yun at first glance,” states the company’s website.
“But digging deeper, one discovers a sea of traditional Chinese culture. Mortals and divine beings merge on stage as one. Principles such as benevolence and justice, propriety and wisdom, respect for the heavens, and divine retribution, all come to life, washing over the audience. Originating from Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, these ideals are the essence of traditional Chinese culture.”
Ms. Carty said the range of nuanced dance pieces and the folk and ethnic dances struck her, and called the entire performance incredible.
Dancers Impressive
Ron Kutz, a math professor at Western Connecticut State University, said the colors in the performance stood out, as well as the handmade costumes and the dancing.
Classical Chinese dance is an art form that has drawn from a myriad of different dynasties and eras, passed down within the imperial palace and ancient Chinese theater and opera, according to Shen Yun’s website.
“Dance is one part of human culture. Classical Chinese dance is grounded in 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture, and is a dance art form built upon a deep foundation of traditional aesthetics,” the website says.
Robert Tassone, a financial consultant, appreciated the dancers.
“How delicate the dancers are,” he said, “is very impressive.”
