PITTSBURGH—The vibrant colors and costumes displayed on stage at Saturday night’s Shen Yun performance at the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts in Pittsburgh, wowed theatergoers.
Sue Palmisano, a professor of art at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), enjoyed many aspects of the show.
“I like the costumes, I think the costumes are absolutely beautiful. And all the flowing movement, and the colors, I really enjoyed that part of it,” she said.
“A Shen Yun performance features the world’s foremost classically trained dancers, a unique orchestra blending the sounds of both East and West, breathtaking backdrops, splendid costumes, singers—together creating an experience that’s leaving millions in awe,” according to the Shen Yun website.
Don Drolet, who owns an antique book website, was moved by the diverse culture and dance depicted in the performance.
“I think it’s really important...that we learn more about the cultures around the world and we see the traditional dance...that they can bring to us, because before long those things will be lost,” he said. “So it’s very special that a show like this takes place so we can learn more about the folk dance, the traditional dance, the traditional classical dance. It’s very interesting.”
Shen Yun website explains how China’s deep cultural traditions are contained in classical Chinese dance: “Allowing its movements to be richly expressive, such that the personalities and feelings of characters can be portrayed with unparalleled clarity. It is therefore capable of depicting scenes from any time period, whether ancient or modern, Eastern or Western, in a strikingly vivid way.”
Mrs. Palmisano enjoyed the gracefulness of Shen Yun’s dancers where “the women sort of skim across the floor—which is so beautiful—and it echoes the flow of the movement of the silk that they’re wearing,” she said. “It’s just lovely.”
