Three skyscrapers meant to be the pride of Shanghai’s skyline are being ridiculed by the public as “a three-piece kitchen tool set,” since they appear to resemble a whisk, a bottle opener, and a basting syringe.
The three buildings—the Shanghai Tower, the Shanghai World Financial Center, and the Jin Mao Tower—stand alongside one another.
The “whisk,” or the Shanghai Tower, which is still under construction, will eventually stand 632 meters high (2,073 feet), consisting of 121 stories above ground, a 5-story auditorium, and 5-stories below ground. Upon completion it will be the tallest building in mainland China and the second tallest building in the world.
The “bottle opener” is the Shanghai World Financial Center, which stands at 492 meters tall (1,614 feet), and has 101 floors above ground.
The “basting syringe” is the Jin Mao Tower, which stands at 420.5 meters tall (1,378 feet) and has 88 floors above ground, or 93 floors if the spire floors are counted.
These three buildings have triggered heated debates on the internet, and many people have been laughing at and ridiculing them. One netizen mocked the designers by suggesting that they must have consisted of a drunk, a medical doctor, and a housewife.
