SAN FRANCISCO—Set designer Yave Gusman saw Shen Yun perform at the SHN Orpheum Theatre on March 23 for a sold out audience.

“The dancing was superb,” said Mr. Gusman, who is a set designer for plays and musicals.

“The costumes, they were just outstanding; they were great, colorful,” said Mr. Gusman.

New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts was founded in 2006 with the mission to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture.

Mr. Gusman says he was particularly impressed by the graphics technology used in the performance. Shen Yun uses state-of-the-art digital projection techniques to create vividly animated settings.

According to the Shen Yun website the digitally projected backdrops “are magical windows to completely different realms. From vast open grasslands in one dance to the stately elegance of Tang Dynasty pavilions.”

“The video, the backdrops, was ‘wow’ ... I cannot figure out how it is done,” said Mr. Gusman.

Mr. Gusman said that the classical Chinese dancing in the performance was very graceful as well as full of energy.

Classical Chinese dance forms the core of Shen Yun’s performances. It is an art form that has a history of thousands of years.

Mr. Gusman says he particularly enjoyed the piece An Early Spring in the performance. In the piece the change of seasons is symbolized by the dancers’ twirling handkerchiefs.

“I thought that was great … they must have practiced that a thousand times,” he said.
