NEW YORK—Congressman Jose Serrano secured a $300,000 Citizenship Grant from the Department for Homeland Security for the Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrants Rights NMCIR-Bronx Project.

The project will provide legal and educational services to immigrants of the Bronx, including filing for citizenship and naturalization, ESL classes and civic education classes in preparation for citizenship exams.

“We are proud to introduce this new project to the Bronx community,” explained Executive Director of NMCIR Raquel Batista. “NMCIR has over 25 years of experience working with and organizing the immigrant community on the issues of family reunification, detention, deportation and citizenship. NMCIR Bronx Project now has the true support it needs to provide high quality services to the Bronx.”

“In a borough where 30 percent of the population is foreign born, it is critical that, as one of the few organizations of this kind in the Bronx, we provide high quality legal and educational support to the underserved immigrant population of the Bronx,” said the deputy director of NMCIR, Angela Fernandez, who will be heading up the new office in the Bronx.
