SEOUL, South Korea—The 28th International Food Industry Exhibition included food exhibits from more than 700 Korean companies and over 400 international companies from 32 countries.

The four-day trade fair, which concluded on May 15, was held at the Korea International Exhibition Center in Goyang City, South Korea.

Among the international exhibits, the Chinese exhibit was the largest, with more than 60 booths. While the booths displayed a variety of Chinese food products, they attracted few visitors.

Exhibits from Taiwan, Japan, the United States, and other countries were busy with customers. Taiwanese tilapia, sea bass, clams, dried squid, soy sauce, sesame seeds, and processed and frozen food products attracted the interest of many customers.

Food Safety Concerns

Currently, major shopping centers in South Korea rarely carry food that is produced in China due to increased concern for food hygiene and safety. In the past, there was a common saying: “Eat in China, buy apparel in France, play in the U.S., live in England.” Now, “eat in China” has lost its appeal.

The International Food Industry Exhibition showcases the cuisine of many different cultures and regions, but the Chinese exhibition has lost its popularity.

Due to toxic food incidents involving melamine, formaldehyde, formalin, malachite green, Clenbuterol, and various other toxic food additives, Chinese food is now associated with poisonous food in the minds of international customers.

According to Korean customers, foods from Taiwan are becoming more popular because the foods are considered safer.

The deputy chairman of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council, Mr. Wayne W. Wu, led the delegation from Taiwan. He said that for Taiwan, South Korea is a big market worth developing.

Approximately 1,027 exhibitors from 31 countries and 40,000 visitors were expected to attend the exhibition, according to the organizers.
