Senator Edward Kennedy collapsed from an apparent seizure during the post-inauguration luncheon at the Capitol on Tuesday. He was rushed bu ambulance to a hospital.

Senator Kennedy, who has found to be ill with brain cancer last May, was reported to have suffered from a seizure. He is 76 years old and a member of the iconic Kennedy family.

Later in the evening, a spokeswoman at the Washington Hospital Center, where he received treatment, said that the Massachusetts Senator was awake and answering questions.

Senator Kennedy’s wife, Vicki, and his son Representative Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., were reported to be with him in the hospital.

Senator John Kerry, D-Mass., who visited Kennedy at the hospital later, said in a press conference that Kennedy was feeling better. “He’s laughing and joking right now ... He’s got all his Irish dander up, and he’s anxious to get back to work.”

Senator Robert Byrd, 91, also had to be taken from the luncheon for health reasons.

Senator Kennedy has suffered from seizures after his first attack. He was diagnosed last May with malignant glioma, a particularly aggressive form of brain tumor. Kennedy had surgery for his tumor last year, and appeared to be in fine health when he was at the inauguration platform where Obama took his oath of office.

Kennedy’s endorsement of Barack Obama came at one of the defining moments of the Democratic primaries, and was one of the many key factors that helped Obama hold off challenger and rival Hillary Clinton.
