Selena Gomez, the teen actress and singer, drinks olive oil before performances to protect her voice, reports said on Monday.

“Before I go on stage, I drink olive oil,” the lead singer of band Selena Gomez and the Scene told British magazine Top of the Pops. “It’s disgusting, but it’s good for your throat. Then I grab my band and we do vocal warm ups and dance.”

Gomez, whose band’s latest album Kiss and Tell was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America, admitted that she has a few rituals that she carries out with her band before each performance.

“We put our hands together and say a little prayer [before each show],” she gave an example.

In addition to rituals, the Naturally and Round and Round singer also has her own song writing habits. She said that she likes to write about events or stories that truly resonate with her.

“I definitely draw on things that have happened to me or it’ll be something I’ve heard a story about, or that someone close to me is going through. Most of the time, it’s something personal,” she said.
