A ghost-like creature has been spotted off the Hawaiian islands, and scientists believe this is the first time it has been documented.

A news release issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reveals that a remotely operated vehicle was surveying an underwater area as part of the Okeanos Explorer mission when “it came across a remarkable little octopod sitting on a flat rock...”

The piece goes on to state, “The appearance of this animal was unlike any published records and was the deepest observation ever for this type of cephalopod.”

Upon further examination, the scientists determined that it probably belongs to the incirrate family of octopods because of a single line of suckers along each tentacle. However, it appeared to differ from the norm because of its lack of color and muscles, and that it was found at extreme depth of more than 4,000 meters.
