Lizardfish are bottom-dwelling fish found in tropical and subtropical waters. They are ambush predators, burying themselves in the substrate until a victim moves within reach.
They are usually small with a narrow body and a head that looks like a lizard. Their mouths contain sharp teeth, including on the tongue.
Lizardfish prefer sandy habitats, and often have coloration that aids camouflage in such environments.
Lembeh Strait in North Sulawesi is well-known for its high marine biodiversity, particularly of unusual animals that live on exposed sand areas.
