KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan—Well-known art education scholar Hwang Ren-Lai saw Shen Yun Performing Arts Touring Company in Kaohsiung on March 1. Professor Hwang said, “The program was indeed very wonderful.”

Dr. Hwang first saw Shen Yun a few years ago, and said the use of an interactive digital backdrop had become even more refined. “More high tech has been synchronized with the artistic performance (this year).” He said the artistic use of high technology was something unique to Shen Yun Performing Arts.

“The backdrops are magical windows to completely different realms. From vast open grasslands in one dance to the stately elegance of Tang Dynasty pavilions in another; from dusty yellow battlegrounds to tropical beaches to Himalayan peaks to picturesque scenery of the Yellow River Delta—the digital projection infinitely expands and transforms the stage,” according to the Shen Yun website.

He praised the dancers. He took the use of twirling handkerchiefs (in An Early Spring) as an example.

Dr. Hwang said he held his breath to watch every dancer’s movements attentively, and found that their skills were so exquisite that every movement was completely flawless. He said, “They are really remarkable.” He attributed the achievement to Shen Yun performers’ rigorous training and to perfect choreography.

“The program is well designed, and the colors and the costumes match perfectly.” He added that these elements where what made the performance so outstanding and the overall visual effect so wonderful.

Dr. Hwang said that the artistic conception of the The Emperor Journeys to the Moon, and the dance rhythms in Han Imperial Air impressed him.

“Shen Yun enabled the audience to have a general understanding of the essence of 5,000 years of Chinese culture in a short period of time. This is something that’s most precious for Shen Yun,” Dr. Hwang said.

His country is open and democratic, according to Dr. Hwang. “So, people in Taiwan are likely to appreciate high-level drama or cultural performances such as Shen Yun, and they are able to gain more from such an experience.”

To him, Shen Yun is about more than beauty. “At present, our entire society needs to be upgraded, not only at the level of culture and arts, but also in the areas of morality and religion. Shen Yun’s performance can have this kind of effect. Not only can Shen Yun inspire modern people but it can also affect people in the future. ”

Dr. Hwang said he heartily recommends Shen Yun.

Dr. Hwang received his doctorate in Art Education from the University of Georgia in America, and is the former chair of the Department of Communication Arts and coordinator of the Graduate Institute of Creative Arts Industries at the Wenzao Ursline College of Languages. His specializes in research methodology, contemporary trends in the arts, art creation, and arts education.
