Saudi Arabian authorities have informed France of new threats from al-Qaeda, French Minister of the Interior Brice Hortefeux disclosed on Monday. Hortefeux said the alert spoke of an imminent al-Qaeda threat to Europe, particularly France. “This is not about overestimating the threat or underestimating it. I am indicating, based on all these elements, that the threat is real,” he said, reported RTT News.

Hortefeux revealed this information during a TV and radio interview where he also revealed that Paris had been told to specifically watch out for al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. A small branch of al-Qaeda has been blamed for several deadly attacks in the Arab world.

The diverging branch, known as “AOAP” is also suspected to be responsible for the attempted bombing of a U.S. airliner on Christmas Day last year.
