A shooting at Santa Monica College in Southern California on Friday prompted authorities to lock the school’s campus down. Reports say that several people were injured in the incident.
The Los Angeles Times reported that a suspect in the shooting was detained by police.
The suspect was discovered in the campus library before being taken into custody.
The exact injuries are not known at this time, and it is unclear how many victims there were.
The Associated Press reported that victims were shot inside a car on the the campus or nearby.
Students were asked to stay away from open spaces on the campus, reported KTLA television. They also were told not to open doors until college officials confirm.
“We didn’t know what was happening until all the students at the entrance of the library started running down towards the bottom of the library,” student Sam Luster told ABC-7 in Los Angeles.
Luster said that he could hear multiple gun shots.
The shooting is not far from where President Barack Obama is visiting. He will attend a Democratic National Committee fundraising event in Santa Monica.
“We are aware of the incident and it is not impacting the visit,” Secret Service Edwin Donovan said. “It’s a local police matter at this point.”
