Sally Meyerhoff, Marathon Runner, Dies in Bike Accident at Age 27

[youtube]SFoHsUqR2Bs[/youtube] Sally Meyerhoff Comes in first in Skirt Chaser 2011 Sally Meyerhoff, aged 27 and considered one of America’s top 10 marathon runners, died Tuesday when her bike collided with a pickup truck in Maricopa, Arizona.

Arizona Local News reports that Meyerhoff biked south through an intersection yesterday afternoon, and collided with a truck that was heading east.

LaTricia Woods, Maricopa police department spokeswoman, said that the truck driver showed no signs of impairment.

Also according to Arizona Local News, Anna Rodriguez, who ran track and cross-country with Meyerhoff in high school, said she confirmed the death through Meyerhoff’s younger sister, Samantha.

“It’s shocking; I still don’t believe it happened,” Rodriguez said.

Meyerhoff was a seven-time state high school track and field champion in the 1600 and 3200 meters, finishing 12th in the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships in 2001. She then graduated from Duke in 2006, and during her time there she was an NCAA All-American in cross-country in 2004, and track in 2006. She was also the Atlantic Coast Conference cross-country champion in 2004.

This past January, Meyerhoff won the women’s section of her hometown’s P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon with a time of 2 hours, 35 minutes and 49 seconds, which qualified her for second Olympics Trials.

Most recently, she was training for the 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials in Houston.
