Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden and her husband, Prince Daniel, announced Wednesday that they are expecting their first child. This child is the future heir to the Swedish throne.

The brief press statement from the Swedish royal court said that the birth is expected in March 2012, creating a stir in Swedish and European media.

Rumors have been buzzing for some time in Swedish magazines about a possible royal baby. Apart from being wonderful news for the family, it is also a most welcome positive news story for the Swedish royals.

Since the 2010 marriage of the Crown Princess and Prince Daniel, the Swedish royal court has not had an easy time. The canceled royal marriage between Princess Madeline and Jonas Bergstrom over a fling accusation, an unflattering book about the King, and Nazi allegations against the Queen’s late father, have all led to the wrong kind of media attention.

But on Wednesday, all of this is naturally forgotten. The royal court’s home page actually collapsed for 20 minutes under the pressure of media and happy citizens, DN.se reported.

Speculations about possible names for the future heir to the throne of Sweden are also already in full swing. Betting company Unibet is going for Gustav or Oscar if it’s a boy, and Désirée if it’s a girl. On a newly formed Facebook group, less likely suggestions have been made, such as Emma Tallulah II, Jan Mohammad and Rex.
