Andy Roddick, trying to extend his final US Open run, took his match against Argentina’s Juan Del Potro to a first-set tiebreak when rain forced the referee to call the match. The match will be resumed Wednesday morning.
Roddick, who won the US Open in 2003 and is the last U.S. man to win a Grand Slam, announced his retirement last week. The 30-year-old would like to leave the sport with another US Open title; he will have to get by number-eight ranked Del Potro to get to the semi-finals.
Roddick took a one-break lead halfway through the first, but let his 23-year-old opponent back into the match by missing too many crucial shots.
Del Potro started very slowly, staying back in the court and playing passively. He finally started attacking halfway through the set, breaking back and earning another break point.
Roddick used his powerful serve and a few booming forehands to tie the match at six games each, forcing a tie-breaker, and got a single point before the rain, which had been falling intermittently throughout the match, became steady.
