The soon-to-be retired Andy Roddick played with the weight of the world off his shoulders Friday night under the lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium as he blitzed past Australia’s Bernard Tomic 6-3, 6-4, 6-0.
Roddick, the former U.S. Open champion who unexpectedly announced his retirement on Thursday started the match with three blistering trademark aces in the first game alone. The man who once hit 155 mph on the radar gun dialed it up at speeds of up to 139 mph Friday night and kept Tomic off balance all night long. By the middle of the third set the 19-year-old Tomic seemed to already resign himself to defeat.
The final six games took just 21 minutes to complete and when it was done the overwhelming majority of fans got what they wanted—a promise of at least one more Andy Roddick match.
The 30-year-old Roddick will face Italy’s Fabio Fognini in the third round.
