SEATTLE—Shen Yun Performing Arts opened in Seattle Thursday night, March 28, at the Marion Oliver McCaw Hill in Seattle, bringing ancient Chinese history to life for Ms. Dawn Crowley.
“5,000 years in such a short period of time,” Ms. Crowley said. “I definitely feel like I’m more aware of the different dynasties.”
Ms. Crowley is a reporter by training, having worked for KSFY, the ABC affiliate in South Dakota, KREM, the CBS affiliate in Spokane, and Titan Outdoor, which brought her to Seattle. A longtime lover of the performing arts and no stranger to production, Ms. Crowley said that New York-based Shen Yun’s use of color stood out most to her.
“There is a lot of artistry,” Ms. Crowley said when asked about the quality of the dancers’ costumes. Shen Yun’s costume artists create nearly a thousand separate pieces of costumes for the performers every year, drawing inspiration from every era in Chinese history.
“It’s definitely vivid, and all the different colors together—as well as the dancers coming together in such great synchronization—makes the dance come alive,” she added.
Shen Yun’s dancers perform classical Chinese dance and ethnic and folk dances, all accompanied with an animated, digital backdrop projecting vivid landscapes and ancient palaces.
“I’m really enjoying it,” Ms. Crowley said.
