Former President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura Bush, didn’t vote for Hillary Clinton, a spokesman confirmed on Election Day.
It came after conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh made the announcement on-air that he was “told” the Bushes voted for Clinton, a Democrat.
George W. and Laura Bush left the section for president blank as they voted, marking off only Republicans down the ballot, CNN reported, citing their spokesperson.
“Rush is wrong and should apologize,” Freddy Ford, a spokesman for the Bushes, told the network.
“They didn’t vote for Hillary; they didn’t vote for Trump,” Ford added to The Texas Tribune.
Before Bush’s spokesman responded to Rush’s comments and a bevy of reports on Tuesday afternoon, a number of outlets—including the Washington Examiner, The Hill, and New York Magazine—reported that Bush had voted for Clinton.
Ford’s statement is the first time the former president from 2001 to 2009 has made a public comment on the race.
Bush’s nephew and son of Jeb Bush, George P. Bush, several weeks ago claimed that George W. Bush and former President George H.W. Bush would both cast their ballots for Clinton.
But The Texas Tribune, citing a spokesperson for George H.W. Bush, said the former president’s choice wouldn’t be revealed. “We are not commenting on the presidential race,” Jim McGrath said.
Former Gov. Jeb Bush, who ran against Trump in the Republican primaries, didn’t reveal who he is voting for—telling CNN he believes in a secret ballot.
