SEOUL, South Korea—Tens of thousands of soldiers have been mobilized in South Korea to clear record levels of snowfall. On Monday South Korea was hit by the largest snowstorm to date since 1937. The snow caused traffic jams and bogged down the nations’ airports as blustery winter weather moved across Northeast Asia from China.

The peninsula received 11 inches of snow by Monday night causing dangerous road conditions throughout the entire country. Officials requested citizens stay off the road when possible, and use chains on their cars if travel was necessary.

At least three people died in traffic accidents believed to have been caused by the weather conditions.

Because of the dubious road conditions, many Seoul residents turned to the subway, resulting in massive crowds at stations. More than 340 flights were canceled or delayed at Seoul’s two international airports, Incheon and Gimpo.

Though the unprecedented snowstorm crippled the country’s transportation systems, not everyone was unhappy. Citizens came out in droves to throw snowballs and photograph the crisp white scenery.
